A significant fraction of progressives are just going to oppose any nice urban thing because the price point is not to their taste. They raise the same complaint with market-rate urban housing.
The problem with that is, if you kill these nice, pricey things, you never get a vibrant urban core. The alternative to the shoppy shop is a national chain in a shopping strip or a mall, aka “suburban sprawl”. The alternative to high-priced new apartments downtown is OSB subdivisions on the side of a highway, aka “suburban sprawl”.
It’s important to note that once you get enough of these things, the price goes down. But America has to stomach these things being expensive *for a while* until we can satiate demand. Therein lies the dilemma.
